10 Reasons to Call Bath Home
Why is Bath such a great place to live? Here are 10 reasons that readily spring to mind.

1. COSMOPOLITAN CREATURES

Bath may be much smaller than cities such as London, Paris and New York, but it’s no less cosmopolitan. There is a vibrant lifestyle here, and those accustomed to a urban existence (aren’t we all?) will have no problem in fulfilling their chic city slicker needs.

2. RURAL BATH

What is so unique about Bath is that while there is a sophisticated city scene, the area itself is encased in countryside. To the north and east are the Cotswolds, characterised by chocolate box villages. To the south and west are the Mendips, offering thousands of acres of spectacular scenery. Whatever your rural vice – be it walking, horse-riding, hunting or shooting – you can find it here.

3. PARK LIFE

This pastoral peace extends in to the city itself. Indeed, Bath is extremely green, with much of it being protected green belt land. There are numerous parks – such as Victoria Park, Henrietta Park and Parade Gardens – to relax in, as well as the Prior Park Landscape Garden, a master class in 18th century horticulture.

4. CULTURE VULTURE

Bathonians are spoilt by a jam-packed calendar of cultural treats. The city is on the main theatre circuit and plays host to various festivals throughout the year. And with numerous art galleries, music gigs, poetry performances and public lectures, culture vultures are sure not to go hungry.

5. SHOPPING

“Bath is such a charming place, there are so many good shops here”. Not my words, but those of Jane Austen, who lived in Bath during the early 1800s. The statement still rings true, as shoppers enjoy a blend of big brand names, independent boutiques, antique shops and weekly flea markets.

6. SPORTS MAD

Rugby is part to the city’s fabric and match days at the Recreational Ground generate a fantastic atmosphere, both inside and outside the ground. Beyond the scrum, enjoying a picnic while watching Bath Cricket Club is always a fun day out.

7. WATER WORLD

The River Avon intersects the city, and the Kennet and Avon canal runs along parallel. Together they provide a tranquil setting, and you will often find people fishing, walking or simply sitting and enjoying the peace and quiet.

8. A DAY AT THE RACES

If you fancy a flutter, Bath Racecourse is located on Lansdown Hill and holds a comprehensive programme of fixtures. Ladies Day is always a favourite, and is a great excuse to buy a swanky new hat.

9. EDUCATION MATTERS

Bath’s schools are amongst the best in the country and encourage children to participate in a fantastic variety of activities, incorporating sports, music and the arts. The University of Bath, which has been named third in the Sunday Times University Guide 2013, also boasts excellent facilities. Many of these are open to the public, most notably the £35m sports training village.

10. JE NE SAIS QUOI

Lastly, it’s something that is difficult to describe. It’s the immediate sense of history and awe-inspiring architecture. It’s the elegancy and beauty that flows throughout the city and into the surrounding environs. It’s these things that conspire together to create something very special, so that simply walking through town is a recreational activity in itself.
